“God the Sower”

Jesus talks about four types of soils: hardened, shallow, thorny, and good soil. This parable is not about farming itself; instead, it talks about the realities of our faith life and ministry. 

 

There is a sower. He scatters the seeds, and some of them fall on a street, on hard soil. Jesus tells us that without understanding, the word of the kingdom cannot take root and grow. Soon, a bird comes and snatches away the seeds, hindering their potential for growth.

 

In order for us not to fall away during the dark moments of our lives, our faith needs to grow deeper. There was a woman that I know who left the church once she became greatly disappointed with God. She said she did what the church asked her to do: worship every Sunday, join the Bible study, work in the hospitality team, usher guests, and make coffee in the kitchen. She even faithfully tithed. However, her life did not go well contrary to her wishes, and her prayers were not answered promptly. She became weary. Her frustration about her life grew deeper, and she directed her blame and resentment towards God. We can say she had faith, but its roots were shallow, so when trouble arose, her faith immediately fell away.

 

When the seeds fall on thorny ground, they cannot grow because the thorns choke them. Jesus warns us that the cares of worldly things and the lure of wealth are like thorns that can hinder our faith.

 

Finally, the good soil. It represents those who hear the word of the kingdom, understand it, and bear fruit. They not only produce a double or triple harvest but yield a bountiful harvest, thirty, sixty, and even a hundredfold. This is the miraculous work of the kingdom of God.

 

This parable has given me an opportunity to reflect on the state of my relationship with God and the kind of ground I represent. I must confess that I have experienced all these aspects - my own successes and failures, encounters with birds, rocks, and thorns. I often find myself anxious, wondering if I will ever become a rich and fertile soil capable of producing a harvest of thirty, sixty, and even a hundredfold. When my focus remains on the condition of the soil, I become concerned about the birds, rocks, and thorns, which will hinder me from becoming a well-weeded and well-fertilized field, ready to receive the seeds of God's kingdom word.

 

However, we don’t call this parable the "parable of the soil." Instead, we call it the "parable of the Sower." That means that this parable may not be mainly focused on our individual failures and successes, rocks, birds, and thorns, but rather on the sower, who generously scatters the seeds regardless of the different soil conditions.

 

The good sower lovingly spreads the seeds everywhere, without concerning the quality of the soil. God feeds birds, intentionally allows weeds, thorns, and dandelions to grow, purposefully places grabble and rocks, and provides fertile ground for abundant crops. That means that God cares for every corner of the world, from barren lands to abundant fields. Regardless of our living conditions, God continually sows seeds of faith, working through us and within us, to fulfill God's vision for our lives.

 

Likewise, our calling is to diligently sow the seeds, just as the extravagant sower does. It doesn't matter how many times we invite our indifferent sons and daughters, neighbors, and friends to Jesus. Our task is to sow the seeds tirelessly because we cannot fully comprehend how God works through us and within us. It is not our responsibility to analyze the mysteries of God's work because it surpasses our capacity. Instead, our calling is to continuously spread the seeds of faith, in every possible place, regardless of whether the soil is fertile or barren. It is a humble way to interpret this parable.

 

Bringing forth the kingdom is not an easy task. We may encounter numerous failures, obstacles, and experience moments of waiting and exhaustion. However, what God reveals to us through the word of Jesus is that in the end, the kingdom will be fully realized. Thanks be to God who shows God’s vision for the kingdom and encourages us to keep on going. Amen.

​"씨 뿌리는 분, 하나님"

예수님은 네 종류의 흙, 즉 딱딱한 흙, 얕은 흙, 가시덤불, 좋은 흙에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 이 비유는 농사 자체에 관한 것이 아닙니다. 오히려, 우리의 신앙생활과 사역의 현실에 대해 이야기를 합니다. 

 

여기 씨 뿌리는 사람이 있습니다. 그가 씨를 뿌리면 어떤 것은 단단한 땅인 길 위에 떨어집니다. 이 말은 깨달음이 없이는 하나님 나라의 말씀이 뿌리를 내리고 자랄 수 없다는 것입니다. 새가 와서 씨앗을 먹으므로 씨앗이 크는 것을 방해하기 때문입니다.

 

우리가 삶의 어두운 순간에 넘어지지 않기 위해서는 우리의 믿음이 더 깊어져야 합니다. 제가 아는 한 여자분은 하나님께 크게 실망한 후 교회를 떠났습니다. 그분은 교회가 하라고 하는 모든 일을 다 했다고 말했습니다. 주일성수, 성경 공부, 새신자 안내, 커피봉사 등이 그것입니다. 십일조도 충실히 드렸습니다. 그러나 그 여자분의 인생은 생각했던 것과는 달리 잘 풀리지 않았고, 기도도 응답되지 않았습니다. 그러면서 점차 믿음이 시들해져 갔습니다. 자신의 인생에 대한 좌절감은 점점 더 깊어졌고, 그 모든 원망을 하나님께 돌렸습니다. 그 여자분에게 믿음이 없었다고는 할 수 없지만, 그 뿌리가 얕은 것이 문제였습니다. 삶에 어려운 문제가 생기면 견디는 힘을 얻지 못했습니다.

 

씨가 가시덤불에 떨어지면 가시에 막혀 자랄 수 없습니다. 예수님은 세상의 염려와 재물의 유혹이 우리의 믿음을 방해하는 가시와 같다고 경고하십니다.

 

마지막으로 좋은 땅입니다. 좋은 땅은 천국의 말씀을 듣고 깨달아 열매를 맺는 자를 상징합니다. 그들은 두 배, 세 배의 수확을 거둘 뿐만 아니라, 삼십 배, 육십 배, 심지어 백 배의 풍성한 수확을 거둡니다. 이것이 하나님 나라의 기적적인 역사입니다.

 

이 비유는 저에게 하나님과의 관계를 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 주었습니다. 저도 새, 돌, 가시 등으로 비유되는 믿음의 척박한 환경에 처해 보기도 했고, 그래서 저 자신이 삼십 배, 육십 배, 백 배의 수확을 거둘 수 있는 비옥한 땅이 과연 될 수 있을까 하는 걱정이 들 때가 많습니다. 저의 관심이 현재 저의 상황이 어떠하냐 하는 질문에만 머물러 있게 되면, 하나님 나라를 방해할 잡초나 새, 바위, 가시에 대해서만 염려하게 될 것입니다.

 

그러나 우리는 이 비유를 "땅의 비유"라고 부르지 않지요.  "씨 뿌리는 자의 비유"라고 부르지 않습니까. 그것은 이 비유가 주로 우리 개인의 실패와 성공, 바위, 새, 가시 등에 초점을 맞추는 것이 아니라, 어떠한 토양 조건에 관계없이 아낌없이 씨를 뿌리는 씨 뿌리는 자에게 초점을 맞출 수 있음을 의미합니다.

 

좋은 씨 뿌리는 자는 토양의 질에 관계없이 넉넉한 마음으로 모든 곳에 씨를 뿌립니다. 하나님은 새를 먹이시고, 의도적으로 잡초와 가시나무와 민들레가 자라게 하시고, 의도적으로 잡초와 돌을 두시며, 풍성한 농작물을 위한 비옥한 땅을 제공하십니다. 척박한 땅에서 기름진 들에 이르기까지 하나님께서는 세상 구석구석을 돌아 보십니다. 우리의 생활 조건에 관계없이 하나님은 우리 삶에 대한 하나님의 비전을 성취하기 위해 계속해서 믿음의 씨앗을 뿌리고 우리를 통해 그리고 우리 안에서 일하신다는 뜻입니다.

 

이와 같이 우리의 소명은 이 씨를 뿌리는 자처럼 우리도 부지런히 씨를 뿌리는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀에 무관심한 우리의 아들딸, 이웃, 친구들을 예수에게 몇 번이나 초대해야 하느냐는 중요하지 않습니다. 우리는 하나님이 우리를 통해, 우리 안에서 어떻게 일 하시는지 알 수 없기 때문에 지침 없이 씨를 뿌려야 합니다. 하나님이 일하시는 것을 분석하는 일은 우리의 능력을 초월하는 일이며, 그것은 우리의 책임도 아닙니다. 우리의 소명은 토양이 비옥하든 메마르든 관계없이 가능한 모든 곳에 믿음의 씨앗을 지속적으로 퍼뜨리는 것입니다. 이 방법이 이 비유를 해석하는 겸손한 방법이라고 생각합니다.

 

하나님의 나라를 완성하고 경험하는 일은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 수많은 실패와 장애물, 기다림에 지쳐 쓰려짐도 경험할 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 예수님의 말씀을 통해 우리에게 말씀하시는 것은 결국 하나님의 나라가 온전히 이루어진다는 것입니다. 우리에게 하나님 나라의 비전을 보여 주시고 그 길로 우리를 이끌어 주시는 하나님 감사합니다. 아멘.
